Boogie Idol is a Japanese artist whose engaging work makes the ironic, parody-laden embrace of vaporwave seem earnest.
On his recent release, “ボルティモア1989,” or “Baltimore1989,” Boogie Idol cooks up a strange, chaotic, and delightful concoction of synthetic slap bass, authoritative drum machines, some strong orchestra hits, and plenty of beautiful synthesizer conversations.
On Soundcloud, Boogie Idol tagged the song as “Shauessen,” AKA “Nippon Ham,” which the Internet tells me is a Japanese brand of hot dogs. I get it. The song is purposefully hammy. He’s being over the top and making it seem like he just splattered a bunch of MIDI channels all over the place with great bombast.
However, amid all of that, is a challenging and engaging work of art. Take a listen:
