In addition to crafting some of the most compelling synthesizer-driven music out there, LA duo ROOM8 are also great remixers. We’ve heard their takes on Kimbra and Say Say, among others, but a few days ago they put out a great remix of Elliphant’s “Love Me Badder.”
On their remix, Ezra Reich and Nic Johns take Sweden-based Elliphant’s dancehall-pop bombast, sedate it a bit, and bathe it in their trademark blend of modern and 80s-infused synths. Along the way they manage to magnify her Caribbean sound without it sounding like a parody.
Ultimately, Elliphant’s original is for bigger occasions and ROOM8’s is for those more serene, contemplative moments.
If given the option, I’d take theirs over her original, which will feature on her forthcoming album, Living Life Golden. It’s not that I don’t like Elliphant’s — I do — but I just like more the mood that Reich and Johns cultivate.
