Somewhere between my being busy with stuff here in New York and a vacation to the banks of Lake Champlain, where I drank the vaunted Heady Topper and contemplated the benefits of the simpler New England life, French House artist Breakbot (AKA Thibaut Berland) released an easygoing and catchy new song.

“Back For More,” aptly titled, is a fine piece of Gallic levity from the longtime Ed Banger Records artist. Its punchy beat and funky bass drive a staccato cascade of stringy and bubbly synths that recall some timeless, classy lounge drenched in 1960s nostalgia while keeping an eye toward classic, modern, and future disco/funk sensibilities. By doing so, Breakbot taps into a vibe found on the soundtrack work that fellow Bangers SebastiAn and Mr. Oizo — along with friend Sebastien Tellier — did for Oizo’s 2007 film Steak.

The cut’s distinct vocals, provided by frequent collaborator Irfane, along with Sarah Ydoux, meld into the song’s arrangements perfectly. For a while it’s all breathy chants as the disco number builds up to its climax, in which the male and female singers touch on the idea of just what it is that keeps things interesting between them.

Early next year, Breakbot is reportedly releasing a follow-up to his 2012 full-length debut By Your Side. I’m glad he’s ready to come back for more, because we sure are.
