Premiere: New NINA Song from Her ‘Drive’-Sampling EP

Berlin-based synthwave artist NINA is known for her ambitious creativity, most recently evident on her latest album, Synthian. Her newest project is something rather novel: Lakeshore Records gave her tracks from Cliff Martinez’s score for Drive to sample and from which to build new songs. Today, Vehlinggo premieres the invigoratingly killer “Where It Ends,” which uses a sample of the Drive cue “After the Chase.”

Teaming up for most of the five-cut Control EP with frequent collaborators/producers LAU and Oscillian, along with Sunglasses Kid, NINA (AKA Nina Boldt) has crafted a fleet of turbocharged cuts bathed in neon-noir and covering concepts of duality, obsession, escape, love, and hope.

“This EP had a unique creative process,” NINA said in a statement. “Oscillian, LAU, Sunglasses Kid and I started out sampling Cliff Martinez’s iconic Drive film score, which inspired us. We then went on to create our own imaginary pop soundtrack.”

They certainly succeeded.

Control is available for pre-order now and releases digitally on Friday, Dec. 11 via Lakeshore Records.

Control follows a couple other synthwavers’ takes on Martinez’s influential score. Last month, Lakeshore Records released remixes of Martinez Drive cues by Miami Nights 1984 and Waveshaper.
