New film Seance — Simon Barrett’s directorial debut after co-writing modern classics like You’re Next, The Guest, and Blair Witch with Adam Wingard — is a major topic of discussion in horror circles. Bolstering the chatter is Sicker Man’s noteworthy score, which releases Friday via Lakeshore Records. Today, though, Vehlinggo gives you a preview of a track entitled “Spooky Trap.”
Sicker Man (AKA Tobias Vethake) is a German musician who’s been composing and arranging music for film and television for years, but Seance represents the first time he’s composed a score under the moniker of his solo project. The result is a chilling web of haunting orchestrations and cavernous, trap-laden electronic rhythms that evoke (or perhaps invoke!) the spectral qualities of the seemingly evil forces at play in the tony girls’ school where all the terrifying happenings going down as a result of some students’ bid to speak to the dead.

Camille Meadows (Suki Waterhouse) is the new girl at the prestigious Edelvine Academy for Girls. Soon after her arrival, six friends invite her to join them in a late-night seance, calling forth the spirit of a dead former student who reportedly haunts the halls. But before morning, one of the girls is dead, leaving the others wondering what they may have awakened. The film, distributed by RLJE Films, is out now.

More about Sicker Man
In addition to releasing albums of his own various musical projects, such as the electronic-jazz duo Mini Pops Junior on his label blankrecords, Vethake also provides a platform for new, not-yet-established artists, such as the experimental sound collective Bohemian Drips.
His solo-project Sicker Man, though, is the focal point of his artistic creation. The project is a vessel through which he transfers his musical visions into reality, blending classical songwriting with captivating soundscapes; his main instrument the electric cello. He has been collaborating with a global array of artists, and is the producer and co-writer of various international releases, including Serengeti (US), João Orecchia (RSA), Machine Est Mon Coeur (AUS/FR), and Trialogos (IT/GER).
In March 2020, in response to the drastic change of the way of life during the pandemic, Sicker Man and collaborator Kiki Bohemia started a daily series of livestream concerts called Cleansing Drones For Locked Down Homes. With “Fragments Of Futures Past,” Sicker Man pursued the daily livestream concert routine during the summer and created 70 electro-acoustic instant compositions for solo electric cello. In November 2020 Kiki Bohemia, Conny Ochs, and Sicker Man formed a new project named Trialogos. The band played their debut gig at Roadburn Redux Festival in April 2021 and their debut album will release on June 18 on Exile on Mainstream Records.
