NBC’s popular crime comedy-drama Good Girls — starring Christina Hendricks (Drive, Mad Men), Retta (Parks & Rec) and Mae Whitman (Arrested Development, Parenthood) finishes its four-season run today, and over the course of the past two seasons a noticeable element has been the compelling score by duo Drum & Lace and Ian Hultquist. Today, Vehlinggo premieres a track from their forthcoming, synth-informed Good Girls—Original Series Soundtrack called “Get in the Car.” It’s a dreamy slow-burner that entrances with a creative earnestness, through which it invokes the spirit of Angelo Badalamenti’s work on Twin Peaks.
Drum & Lace, AKA Sofia Hultquist, (Dickinson) and her husband, Passion Pit founding member Ian Hultquist, (Assassination Nation, Dickinson) are no strangers to Vehlinggoland. Longtime readers will find a lot to love in their musical contribution to creator Jenna Bans’ show. For Good Girls, the LA-based duo deftly cultivate a notable balance between the lighthearted and the profound, relying on a large toolkit of talent and experience and a clear drive to never make routine music. Good Girls follows suburban moms Beth (Hendricks), Ruby (Retta), and Annie (Whitman) who, at a loss over how to solve their various crippling financial troubles, decide to rob a supermarket in a heist that attracts the attention of a local gang leader named Rio. The high-caliber creative talent and interesting storytelling have drawn viewers in over the past few years. The 27-track soundtrack album captures the Hultquists’ cues from the past two seasons in a fantastic showcase of the quality of work they’ve brought to the table.

Sofia and Ian Hultquist have been providing their scores to film and television together as a team and independently of each other for years. The Florence, Italy-raised Sofia often but not always is billed under her Drum & Lace pseudonym — a project through which she also records lush and genre-free original studio albums and singles, and has performed with the likes of The Echo Society. You can hear Ian’s guitar and keyboard work on such influential indie records as Passion Pit’s 2009 album Manners and 2012 album Gossamer.
