You might not know of Manchester, England-based The Flints yet, but you should get on board. They could be your next favorite band, after all. On that note, today the duo dropped a collaboration with Vehlinggo’s favorite duo, Electric Youth. “End of Me,” produced with Koz, who among other things produced Dua Lipa’s exquisite “Levitating,” deftly showcases the bands’ mutual appreciation for each other’s work and how an Electric Youth feature can elevate even a pristinely serene song to stratospheric heights. This is a fantastic song.
Known for their transcendentally crafted rock/pop songs like “Serengeti” and future disco number “Right Kind of Love,” The Flints exist somewhat in the same space as Electric Youth (and the likes of Tame Impala or even some moments of Empire of the Sun): blending nuanced, precisely crafted compositions with ear-candy hooks and meaningful songwriting in an often mystical or psychedelic space. “End of Me” of course falls into that territory, slowly unfurling a deceptively relaxed vibe that belies the trepidation in the lyrics. When The Flints or Electric Youth’s Bronwyn Griffin casually sing in the chorus, “I swear you’ll be the end of me,” following a build up of stark assessments, you could take it as an acceptance that a relationship is gonna go down in flames. Or you could see it as gallows humor from people still a bit in a state of shock. The dopamine hit from the flanged rhythm section, the chorusy guitar infusions, and colorful synths can’t shake that unsettling feeling of a relationship with all the cracks.
“End of Me” features some notable contributions from the two duos: co-writing and production from twins George and Henry Flint (along with Koz) and additional writing and production from Electric Youth’s Austin Garrick and additional vox from EY’s Bronwyn Griffin. The song is available on various digital platforms now.
