Highway Superstar released a minimalist new song yesterday called “Empathy.” Check it out.
The synth melody is gorgeous, which is no surprise coming from the synthwave Superstar. However, this is a much more subdued track than we usually get from him. This is just great, though. I’m in the mood lately for the more restrained side of things.
What stands out to me is the drum samples. They sound exactly like the drums on my old Casio SK-1 from 1985, as seen in the hands of Gene Belcher in Bob’s Burgers. IDM pioneers Autechre also used the keyboard at one point back in their early days.
All in all, it’s a great, catchy cut from one of the biggest players in the scene.
