Chromatics dropped a new single today called “TOY” and, as you’d expect, it’s a blissful number that stays with you. Ruth Radelet’s heavenly vocals float in an ethereal state over a tight, arp-driven rhythm section and memorable synth melodies, meanwhile searing fairy-tale chimes and enchanted woodwinds cascade in your headspace as if to compel a dreamy trance.
“It’s a song about trying to forget someone you’re still in love with even though they treat you like an object. I’m not your TOY.” – Chromatics singer Ruth Radelet said in a press release.
Even with sad lyrics the upbeat music instills some sense of hope. This shouldn’t be a surprise to regular Chromatics listeners. The band have a gift for balancing sadness and wistfulness with the drive to move one’s body toward a greater tomorrow.
The single, produced by Johnny Jewel, follows the recent release of a deluxe version of last year’s Closer To Grey (review of original here). To buy Italians Do It Better vinyl and downloads, visit their inimitable store.
