If ‘You Never Knew’ How Good Negative Gemini Is, Now You Do

I often find myself listening to New York-based Negative Gemini’s Real Virtual Unison EP when I need some form of catharsis. Life’s tough in this town, after all. Her beautiful and dark ethereal minimalism shines on that collection, and based on new single “You Never Knew” it doesn’t seem like she’s letting up on the cold and catchy cuts.

Negative Gemini, AKA Lindsey French, has a powerful voice that carries the future-pop beats and catchy synth melodies to great heights. All of that comes together without any compromise. Think of Charli XCX’s early mixtapes, which were dark pop and darkwave experiments laced with the most bittersweet of vocal melodies.

So too here. French has crafted a fascinating pop cut. It barely holds itself together in a vast empty expanse, too great to contain itself in the beauty of its sadness, but it’s so laced with hooks and meaning and wonder that people will revel in it.

“You Never Knew,” released on 100% Electronica, is the lead single off her forthcoming album Body Work, due early next year. I can’t wait.
