Composer Jeff Cardoni (Silicon Valley, The Kominsky Method) has a new studio EP entitled Nuovo Futuro coming out on July 24. To hold you over, today Vehlinggo premieres the gorgeous and uplifting single “Sleep After Soma.” It’s available for digital purchase and streaming today.
“‘Sleep After Soma’ is inspired by Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World,” Cardoni said in a statement today. “It seemed fitting in our chaotic present, music might be the antidote to overcome negative emotions and to take a ‘holiday’ from the state we find ourselves in. I imagined the track as a slow hallucination that builds into euphoria and gives the listener a few minutes of joy in this dystopian present.”
The song is the second single to be released from the forthcoming EP, following last month’s release of “Drawn to the Light.”
You can stream “Sleep After Soma” here and buy it on Apple or Amazon.
More Info about Nuovo Futuro
Nuovo Futuro was influenced by classic dystopian literature, which has taken on a new relevance today. From Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World in “Sleep After Soma” to D.G. Compton’s An Unsleeping Eye, and to Omar El Akkad’s recent An American War referenced in “Reunification Day,” the themes of darkness and rebirth had a constant presence when Cardoni was crafting the EP. Each track walks the line between light and darkness, resurrection and redemption, death and rebirth.
The sound concept for the album was purity of sound — getting as much emotional impact from as few elements possible, Cardoni says. Influenced by modern artists such as Sigur Ros, Explosions In The Sky, Radiohead, Max Richter, and blending classical sensibilities, the album attempts be modern yet rooted in history. Instrumentation was intentionally simple. Cardoni played electric guitars and loopers, while adding a modern twist on a string quintet: forgoing high strings in favor of a lower tonality, with two violas, two celli, and an upright bass.
Recorded in Los Angeles in early 2020, the sonic mix is pure, straightforward, and vibrant.
