Today’s One-Liners, coming much sooner than I’d have planned, features some newer material paired with under-reported songs with a bit more vintage. I’m pretty sure you haven’t heard most of these, which is exciting to me.
David Grellier – For Sale (Demo)
Ever since he decided to put his highly influential College project on hiatus (mostly), Nantes, France-based David Grellier has been up to some interesting things. He’s created some memorable deep house cuts, such as last year’s “Lightfast (Original Mix).” But buried on his SoundCloud page, outside of the spotlight, is a deeply moving set of rather intimate electronic demos called For Sale. They feel like the brilliant starting-off point for film cues. I encourage you to listen to all the tracks. (Note: Catch College, Maethelvin, Lifelike and more at Night Arcade in Amsterdam in April.)
Alpiine – Task
The Warhorse – Can’t Stop the Clop
I know it doesn’t seem like it on first blush, but I’m convinced that LA mindfuckers The Warhorse are as influenced by 1990s Britney Spears as they are punk, metal, or Phil Collins. EP is out now via KILLxALLxMUSIC (link in Bandcamp embed). They are not the type of music you’re used to hearing on Vehlinggo, but I think they’re worth your time. (And I have covered them before.)
Lo Five – “Non Conceptual”
Lovely, beautiful things can happen in dreams. Out now.
The Sound Of Love International 002 – Curated by Beautiful Swimmers
I’m wrecked by how good this compilation is. Last spring the DC-based Beautiful Swimmers — Ari Goldman and Andrew Field-Pickering (AKA Max D) — curated a crucial compilation of warm Balearic, R&B, and other genres to capture the sound and feel of the annual summer music festival Love International, which takes place in Tisno, Croatia every July. You can rid yourself of the winter blues with this gem.
(Editor’s Note: As established in this post, the One-Liners column is a concise but meaningful way to highlight Vehlinggo-recommended releases. It’s not exactly weekly, but it can be. Entries are almost never one line, but they could be. Check out the post previous to this one.)
